OK… so I’ve been on this for quite some time and I’m trying to let the secret out the bag… the secret to a flawless foundation application is… Skin Prep!
This step is so important in order to achieve the appearance of flawless skin. Your skin needs to be prepped and pampered prior to adding foundation or concealer!
We all know that everyone has different skin types and we may all have different skin problems but truth be told regardless of your skin type prepping your skin will only enhance your foundation.
Step 1. Clean Your Face
Always… always… always… start off with a clean face! If you hopped out the shower then started to get dressed or started to do your hair, you still need to clean your face. Removing the oils from your face can help not only with the application and appearance of your foundation but also the durability.
Step 2. Moisturize
If your skin is dry, if your skin is oily, if your skin is normal, we all need to moisturize. Of course your skin type will determine exactly what type of moisturizer to use but this is a very important step that you do not want to skip. I strongly encourage you to implement your skin care routine before applying your makeup and try your best to give your face a mini massage… this is to help your skin relax.
Step 3. Prime?
Yes that is the question, because I have been anti-primer for a couple of months now and honestly using primer is entirely up to you and the look that you’re going for. When I say prime I am referring to an actual traditional primer because I have been priming my face with illuminating products like liquid bronzer and a liquid highlight. I use this combo when I’m trying to achieve a dewy finish(which is more often than not)…. for a matte finish I would probably grab a mattifying primer. Like I said this step is entirely up to you, you don’t have to prime with other products that is my personal choice, but I do suggest priming with something. Also there are primers out there for any type of look that you’re going for…There are primers that help you tone certain areas of your face, color correct, add some dew, or even eliminate to dew, so it’s entirely up to you.
Step 4. Chose the Right Products
It took me AGES to find my perfect foundation (which is Anastasia Beverly Hills stick foundation by the way) but yes it took me years and years and years to find a formula that worked perfectly with my skin, that actually offered a shade that perfectly matches. It took some time but ladies and gentlemen your perfect foundation is out there. I’ve had a lot of hits and misses not only with foundations but also with concealer. It’s all about finding what works for you and what gives you the finish that you like. Like I mentioned with primers you can go for a foundation that offers a dewy finish or offers a matte finish. There are even brands out there that offer a semi-matte finish which is what I prefer hence why I love Anastasia Beverly Hills stick foundation. Also when considering foundations, you want to find out what kind of coverage the foundation offers. This also applies to concealers you want to find a concealer that fully covers or lightly covers depending on your preference.
Step 5. Set!
Do not skip this step I find that even a light dusting of a setting powder or finishing powder helps to keep your make up in tack and prevents it from creasing. I also want to make mention that you do not have to follow trends. I know that the trend of baking is extremely popular (even though I think it’s dwindling down a little) it encourages you to pack the powder onto your face, allowing it to sit for an extended period of time so that the powder “melts” into your face leaving a smoother matte-er finish. Personally I don’t bake because my under-eyes tend to be really dry and I don’t want my makeup to look super cakey and I don’t want my bags to be accentuated. Like I said pretty much in every single step, it’s all up to you and your preference. Find out what your skin likes, find out what looks best for your skin and then do that! You can definitely apply as much or as little as you need!
Step 5.5 Setting Spray
Don’t forget to finish up with a setting spray. There tons of options from different brands that offer matte, dewy, illuminating etc!
